Objective.

Provide travelers with easy and fast access to flight information and improve check-in processes, initially addressing aviation hygiene challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Solution.

Developed an AI-powered airport infopoint that evolved from the initial concept of a contactless hygiene device. The solution offers real-time flight information, current waiting times, and directions to gates.

Summary. The journey of SmartAir began with the development of Smart Sanitizer, a contactless hygiene device addressing the aviation industry's needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Featuring flight information, current waiting times, and directions, the device evolved into SmartAir, an AI-powered infopoint that avoids delays, reduces waiting times, and helps passengers relax at the airport. Collaborating with the Institute for Intelligent Industrial Systems at the Berner Fachhochschule, Lufthansa, and Zurich University of Applied Science, SmartAir has validated its concept with customers and is in active discussions for further deployment. This case study highlights how adaptive innovation can transform initial concepts into comprehensive solutions that significantly improve the travel experience.
